• Description:

Karlstad University is inviting applications for a doctoral student position in Biology at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences. The research will focus on evolutionary ecology, using experimental evolution in fruit flies to explore sexual dimorphism in diet and nutrition.

The doctoral student will work closely with supervisor Stephen De Lisle as part of the newly forming Evolutionary Biology group at Karlstad University. The project involves using Drosophila melanogaster to understand how various factors influence sexual dimorphism relating to diet and nutrition. The role allows the student to pursue research aligned with their interests, including genomics, gene expression analysis, behavior, metabolism, and eco-evolutionary interactions.

Doctoral students will be expected to:

    1. Devote time to their studies (240 credits for a Doctorate and 120 for a Licentiate).
    2. Engage in independent work while contributing to the department’s activities.
    3. Potentially take on teaching and administrative duties (up to 20% of full-time).

    Qualifications

    • At least 120 credits in biology, including a master’s degree project (minimum 15 credits)
    • Equivalent knowledge in related fields may be acceptable

    Applications

Interested applicants should submit their applications via Karlstad University’s web-based recruitment tool, Varbi. Ensure that the application includes:

    • Cover letter explaining your interest in pursuing a PhD and the fit with the supervisor, department, and project area
