    Embark on a fully funded 3.5-year PhD scholarship at the Monti Lab, Department of Chemistry, University of Melbourne, with a flexible start date in 2024. Join our interdisciplinary team at the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute to investigate the biological role of DNA secondary structures in the parasite Trypanosoma brucei, shedding light on novel mechanisms of disease pathogenicity.

    The Monti Lab at the University of Melbourne invites applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship focusing on the biological role of DNA secondary structures in host-parasite interactions. By employing cutting-edge techniques at the interface of chemistry and biology, our research aims to understand how DNA secondary structures, such as G-quadruplexes, regulate disease mechanisms, particularly in the parasite Trypanosoma brucei. The prospective PhD student will work on characterizing DNA-secondary structures in T. brucei parasites using a combination of bioinformatics, sequencing, and in vitro cellular assays. Throughout the training, the candidate will gain experience in cell culture, protein expression, biophysical assays, and bioinformatics analysis.

    Qualifications 

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or related fields.
    • Strong academic background and research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or chemistry.
    • Proficiency in English language.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
