• Description:

The project aims to produce ground-breaking science that contributes to fostering successful sustainability transitions. Transformative actions towards sustainability are currently unfolding on an unprecedented scale worldwide. However, emerging evidence suggests that the pursuit of sustainability has, in some instances, led to adverse environmental and social outcomes, such as increasing social inequality or ineffective conservation. Focusing on natural resource systems (forests), the project will develop innovative strategies to anticipate and address negative impacts arising from sustainability initiatives. The applicant will work with Dr. Johanna Yletyinen and an international collaborative team to gain expertise in social-ecological modeling, complex systems research, and the multifaceted nature of sustainability.

The doctoral researcher will conduct interdisciplinary research on sustainability transitions, focusing on analyzing social-ecological systems and developing models to understand the transition process and its outcomes. Tasks include quantitative and qualitative analysis, model coding, collaboration with project partners (including international travel), and producing high-quality academic publications and presentations.

    Qualifications

Applicants must have a Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability Science, or a similar relevant field, or alternatively in Ecology or Social Science with a strong interest in learning social-ecological systems research. Some experience in quantitative research methods and coding is advantageous. Ideal candidates will have a genuine interest in solving complex sustainability challenges, a deep desire to learn and explore new ideas, and the ability to work independently. A commitment to accuracy and responsible conduct of research is essential. We require strong motivation to write a PhD thesis, excellent collaboration skills, willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research, and good oral and written English language skills.
