• Description:

We offer talented doctoral researchers excellent training opportunities in the fields of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biophysics, Epigenetics and Metabolism. Scientific education in a first-class environment supports their development into outstanding young scientists.

Our doctoral researchers receive employment contracts according to the guidelines by the Max Planck Society for the duration of their PhD research. The payment is sufficient to cover the monthly living costs in Freiburg. There are no tuition fees.

Our program provides outstanding students with excellent research-oriented interdisciplinary training in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Epigenetics, Biophysics and Molecular Biology. We train doctoral researchers to become self-reliant and to acquire and utilize the knowledge necessary for their research project. Doctoral researchers have the chance to interact with experts in various fields both to extend their scientific knowledge and to learn critical thinking as well as acquire problem-solving skills.

IMPRS doctoral researchers have 3 to 4 years to obtain their degree. While the PhD research thesis is the main focus of their studies, IMPRS students have the option to round out their education with other curricular activities provided by the program.

The goal of the IMPRS-IEM curriculum is to train doctoral researchers in experimental methods, scientific reasoning and logic, effective communication and ethical behaviour, as well as provide opportunities to acquire career-critical skills. It consists of courses mandatory to all doctoral researchers (Advanced Course and Foundational Course, Good Scientific Practice) and others which they can choose based on their needs and interests.
