Studying Abroad: A Checklist of Things to Consider When Relocating to a New Country

  • By: Scholarships Cafe

Congratulations! Tons of applications, hundreds of emails, lots of research and interviews later, you finally got that yes! Or maybe it was one or two applications. Either way, congratulations. You're a star and you should be very proud of your achievement as we are.

Now comes the next phase. There's lots of planning and preparations in this one. You are literally going to move to a whole new country. Probably a new continent, new language and culture. Sounds overwhelming but exciting right?  You might not have given much thought to how your life would significantly change because you were focused on the application process. Well, we did on your behalf and came up with this guide to help you transition as smoothly as possible into the next phase.

Visa Requirements

This goes without saying of course but just so we cover all bases, ensure that you have all the necessary documents and information to apply for and obtain a student visa for the country you will be studying in. Be aware of the application deadlines and procedures for obtaining a visa. You don't want to miss that funding because your travel documents aren't in on the latest.

Housing

You might think this is  basic right? Well you're right! And you must carefully research and plan for your housing options, whether it be on-campus housing, off-campus apartments, or homestays. Consider the costs, location, and amenities of each option. Lots of first time immigrants have overlooked this step and ended up with very uncomfortable living conditions like sleeping in public libraries or becoming a burden to their hosts. And that's never a good way to start your adventure. So check this box, ten times over if you need to until you're absolutely sure.

Financial Planning

This ranks high on the list. Most likely, the currency used in your destination country won't be the same as that is why you have to make provisions for exchanges. That way, you are never run out spending money. As a new international student, you'd have different financial needs than domestic students, so it's important to plan ahead and budget accordingly. Make sure you have a clear understanding of tuition and living expenses, and consider additional costs such as travel, insurance, and books. Budgeting is key. Sort out priorities first before other needs. For instance it'd be wiser to pay rent and utility bills first before paying for a sight seeing trip.

Language Barriers

If you are not fluent in the language of the country you will be studying in, consider taking language classes or finding a language exchange partner to help you improve your language skills. Another great tip is to learn basic greetings and inquiries before leaving to the new country. Apps like Duolingo is a great place to start. At the beginning, using translation apps  would reduce the anxiety.

Cultural Differences

Research and learn about the culture and customs of the country you will be living in. This will help you to understand and adapt to the new environment. For instance some Asian countries bow in greeting and anything less is considered rude. Learning the local culture  makes it easier to settle in and connect with the natives. It is also wise to make the makes with the locals. That way everything makes more sense.

Support systems

Identify and connect with support systems such as the international student office, student organizations, and local communities. These resources can provide you with valuable information and support during your stay.

Health and Safety

Research the healthcare system and find out what type of insurance you will need. Also be aware of the local emergency numbers and familiarize yourself with the location of local hospitals and clinics. In addition, learn the weather conditions when you're traveling. Because you do not want to wear a light shirt in the dead of winter. Also learn unsafe areas and avoid them. Visit tourist sights in groups until you get familiar.

Transportation: Research the transportation options available in the country, such as buses, trains, and subways, and find out how to buy tickets and navigate the system.

We're rooting for you and equally excited to be part of your journey. By preparing for these things in advance, you will be better equipped to handle any challenges that may arise during your time as an international student in a new country.

Cheers!
